Abstract: The article analyses the role of Yordan Gyurkov, who was sent by the Central Committee of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO) to Petrich to coordinate the local defence and stop the advance of the Greek troops during the 1925 border conflict between Greece and Bulgaria. The text points out key moments in his life that elevated him to the position of reserve member of the Central Committee of IMRO and turned him into one of the most prominent leaders of the IMRO due to his remarkable qualities, both in the military and in the organizational sphere. His character turned him into a beloved leader in the Pirin region, and into a strong figure through whom the decisions and implementation of the important and significant activities were carried out by the IMRO. The text analyses the memory on him after his death in 1931, when his life and work – and his name indeed – became a symbol of the continuation of the struggle waged by the IMRO.
