THE MACEDONIST REACTION AGAINST THE CONDITIONS OF THE REPUBLIC OF BULGARIA FOR THE ACCESSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF NORTH MACEDONIA TO THE EUROPEAN UNION

(Abstract)
The Republic of Bulgaria first recognized the independence of the Republic of North Macedonia after the breakup of Yugoslavia and provided comprehensive assistance to stabilize its southwestern neighbour. On August 1, 2017, an Agreement on friendship, good neighbourhood, and cooperation was signed. One of the key points in its text is the establishment of a common ground in the history of the two countries. However, the Macedonian side does not fulfill the contract exactly and consistently. This prompted the Bulgarian National Assembly to vote on 10 October 2019 a special declaration confirming the conditions under which The Republic of Bulgaria would support the accession of the Republic of North Macedonia to the EU. In this regard, a “group of intellectuals” from Skopje wrote a detailed objection, which was sent to the European Commission in Brussels. This document details the unscientific, Macedonist doctrine of the history, nationality and language of the Slavic population in Macedonia. As heirs to communist ideology, its bearers do not recognize the globally known facts that the Slavs in Macedonia are Bulgarians by nationality, that they speak Bulgarian and have the same historical destiny with the people of the Republic of Bulgaria - a truth which is evidenced in this article, written in response, to the Macedonist reaction to the Declaration of the Bulgarian Parliament. Keywords: European Union, Republic of Bulgaria, Declaration of the Bulgarian Parliament, Agreement on friendship, good neighbourhood, and cooperation, Republic of North Macedonia, Macedonist doctrine.
