The apostolic trip of Pope Francis to Bulgaria on May 5–7, 17 years after the memorial visit of Pope John Paul II, focused again the public interest on the relations of the Bulgarian people with the Hole See and the Catholic Church. And they are as old as Bulgarian Christianity.
They date from the pontificate of Pope Nicholas I (858 – 867) and the conversion of Bulgarians under Prince Boris I in 865. The very next year, Bulgaria turned to Rome in the hope of breaking away from the overly strong political and cultural gravity of Byzantium.
