THE BILATERAL RELATIONS BETWEEN BULGARIA
AND THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA DURING THE
ADMINISTRATION OF LYUBEN BEROV (1993–1994)

(Summary)
The article examines the governance of Lyuben Berov’s cabinet in the
light of the diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and the Republic
of Macedonia. During the studied period, on the one hand, Bulgarian
diplomacy struggled to build legal basis for bilateral relations and to
find a solution to the problems accumulated between the two countries,
and on the other hand, to provide assistance to the young republic
for its international recognition and to overcome the consequences of
the Greek embargo.
On the basis of unpublished archival documents,
research papers, memoirs and press materials, the diplomatic relations
have been scrutinized and analyzed. The Bulgarian reaction to the
embargo imposed on the Republic of Macedonia has been surveyed,
as well as the measures taken to provide timely assistance. Attention
was paid to the problems that arose between the two countries during
the considered period.
The language dispute and the attempts made
to resolve it have also been followed in detail. In conclusion, the
government’s policy towards the Republic of Macedonia has been
summed up.
