So far the research on the Croatian attitude to the Miladinov Brothers’ collection has been trditionally focused on the decisive role and importance of bishop Josip Strossmayer.
This artice argues that the
edition is an integral part of the Croat public and intellectual life for
it was actively accepted, used or analysed by the Catholic church in
the Croat lands, by the People’s Party structures and by the emerging
professional scholar community.
Particular attention is devoted to the
interest to the collection in the faraway peninsula of Istria that was
articulated by the bishop of Poreč and Pula Juraj Dobrila.
