The article examines the place and role of Albania in the policies of the Great Powers and neighbouring Balkan countries during the First World War. Emphasis is placed on the deployment of the Entente troops and the establishment of the Autonomous Albanian Republic of Korçë by the French wartime administration.
The author analyzes various aspects of the policy pursued in the Korçë region and most of all the population census conducted in 1918. The local Bulgarians were registered as an independent ethnic group with two clearly distinguishable subgroups: medieval and Macedonian Bulgarians.
