Angel G. Angelov
(Summary)
The article is devoted to the linguistic publications and notes of
Professor Aleksandăr Balabanov. As is known, he was a polyglot, his
main knowledge and works being in the field of classical philology.
However, Balabanov was also a master of the pen: both an academic
scholar and poet. His knowledge of ancient literature and history,
as well as his deep connection with Bulgarian traditions and human
sciences in Bulgaria, has made him an expert teacher of good language
style and a guardian of the most sensitive moments in the use of
Bulgarian language.
Being a patriot and a cosmopolitan alike, he was
easy-going, but also he was not very accessible due to his authority as
an erudite and professor; he left not only an unforgettable, but also a
much needed imprint on the Bulgarian spiritual culture. His articles
and notes possess a special sophistication and morality, directness and
decisiveness, as well as responsibility towards the future masters of
the pen, which is so necessary even today. They are equally instructive
and alarming because they affect everyone who reads and uses the
Bulgarian language.
Prof. Balabanov’s lines show in practice the
different nuances of our language, teach how to write and speak
sometimes in a sophisticated manner, sometimes spontaneously, how
to think and apply in language the long-honed and cultivated linguistic
sense and taste.
